"Sadly, today marks the fifth day of the Republican Government Shutdown. This crisis could be over in hours if the Speaker and the Republicans would just take ‘yes’ for an answer instead of continuing to be the party of ‘no.’ On seven different occasions the Republican Party of ‘no’ has not taken ‘yes’ for an answer of Democrats offering motions on the Senate passed Republican number of $986 [billion] but Republicans have said ‘no’ each time."

“From generation to generation, immigrants have built, strengthened, and enriched our culture and our society. They have reinvigorated our economy. Every immigrant who reaches our shores with that determination and optimism makes America more American. That tradition is embedded into the very fabric of American strength. Now is the time to honor that tradition, to build on California’s progress, and to ensure that the American Dream remains within reach for every immigrant who hopes to build a brighter future on our shores. Now is the time for comprehensive immigration reform.”

"...But to open government that, in my opinion is a luxury we can’t afford on the side of the Democrats, or the Republicans, so we’re willing to compromise to accept their number. They had two things: $988 billion and overturn Obamacare. This isn’t going to happen. We’re willing to accept this [the $988 billion]. They shouldn’t move the goal posts."

“But all of these things can be the legitimate, not all, but the stuff about the jobs initiatives and investing in the future of the legitimate debate of priorities that is the budget debate. And that’s what I hope that the Republicans will allow, something they asked for, the regular order, something they asked for, the $986 [billion] in the bill, something I think we all want: keeping government open."
