"In recent months, I participated with great pride in ceremonies in Washington and in San Francisco to award the Congressional Gold Medal - the highest award Congress can bestow - to the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service. The cause of these brave patriots was not just the end of fascism, but the end of discrimination: they fought on behalf of the American ideal of equality, which is our heritage and our hope."

"We have a shared responsibility to answer that call, stemming from our belief in shared values. The freedom to assemble peacefully and demand basic human rights. The freedom to practice your faith. The freedom to live in security in your homeland. These values - like the challenge of Tibet - are not limited by borders and are not limited to any one country or parliament."

“What we're talking about today directly relates to what keeps people up at night. Their economic security, the education of their children, the health of their families, the list goes on. Some of those are addressed in this legislation. I think we all agree, the greatest thing the country can do, and that a family can do, is to invest in the education of the next generation. The education of our children. Imagine if we're sitting around that kitchen table, as a family, as we are, and we say as a family ‘in order for your to go to college, we're not going to be able to immunize your little brother or sister, we're not going to be able to have preventative care, in terms of screening for breast cancer, cervical cancer, the list goes on and on, for your mom, or any other preventative care for men and women, in our family. That just would be wrong. As a nation, is that a statement of our values? That you must choose between the education of your children and the health of your family? It's just not right. Especially, when you have a situation where we had this fight over and over again."
