Food Safety Bill Passes House

This afternoon, the House passed the Food Safety Enhancement Act by a vote of 283-142 to fundamentally change the way we protect the safety of our food supply. Each year, 76 million Americans are sickened from consuming contaminated food and 5,000 of these people die. In just the last few years, there has been a string of food-borne illness outbreaks in foods consumed by millions of Americans each day -- from spinach to peppers to peanuts, pistachios and cookie dough. This recent series of outbreaks of food-borne illnesses has demonstrated that they are not random, unpreventable occurrences, but are due to widespread problems with our current food safety system.

Health Insurance Reform Daily Mythbuster: Inaccurate Comments of House Republican Leader John Boehner

This afternoon, at his weekly press conference, House Republican Leader John Boehner continued to spread myths about America's Affordable Health Choices Act. As with so many myths cited by opponents of health insurance reform, the facts disprove his comments.

Myth: "...there's nothing -- nothing -- in the Democrat proposal that will reduce costs of health insurance for the average American..." - Rep. Boehner, 7/30/09

Fact: To the contrary, America's Affordable Health Choices Act includes numerous provisions to reduce costs for Americans:

Eliminates co-pays for preventive and wellness care.

Limits excessive out-of-pocket expenses, deductibles or co-pays.

Creates yearly caps on what patients pay.

Eliminates yearly or lifetime cost caps on what insurance companies cover.

This morning, President Obama named the recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation's highest civilian honor:

Nancy Goodman Brinker is the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world's leading breast cancer grassroots organization.

Pedro José Greer, Jr. is the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs and Florida International University School of Medicine. He is also the founder of Camillus Health Concern, an agency that provides medical care to over 10,000 homeless and low-income patients each year in Miami.

Stephen Hawking is an internationally-recognized theoretical physicist, and is the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University.

Health Insurance Reform Daily Mythbuster: Impact on Seniors

Fact: The provision extends Medicare coverage to cover the cost of patients voluntarily speaking with their doctors about their values and preferences regarding end-of-life care--empowering older Americans on this critical issue. These are deeply personal decisions that take thoughtful consideration, and it is only appropriate that doctors be compensated for their time.

Health Insurance Reform Daily Mythbuster: Impact on Small Business

Myth: The House bill pays for health care reform with a "small business tax" that will kill jobs.

Fact: Small businesses benefit enormously from America's Affordable Health Choices Act.

Reform dramatically reduces small business health costs.

The Small Business Majority recently released a report that showed that without reform, small businesses will pay nearly $2.4 trillion in health care costs over the next 10 years. If health insurance reform is enacted, the report found that small businesses could save as much as $855 billion over 10 years, nearly 36 percent. This money can be reinvested in the business and jobs.

Reform eliminates price and benefit discrimination against small businesses.
