Pelosi: Administration Aid to Automakers Must Include Tough Provisions Mandated by House-Passed Bill

Tom Daschle's nomination as Secretary of Health and Human Services and his selection as Director of the new White House Office of Health Reform is great news for all Americans worried about the cost and quality of their health care, and for the millions who do not have health insurance. His selection demonstrates that President-elect Obama is committed to reforming and modernizing our health care system to provide all Americans with affordable, accessible health care.
It was a privilege to work with Tom Daschle when we both served as Minority Leaders in the United States Congress. During that time, we worked to expand health care and strengthen opportunity for America's working families. He will now take those priorities to the President's Cabinet, where he will be a powerful advocate for all Americans. I look forward to working with him on these vital issues.

Not in a generation have workers faced such challenges, which is why Democrats have repeatedly urged President Bush and Senate Republicans to stop obstructing the economic recovery and jobs bill the House passed in September. Regrettably, Republican opposition to this legislation will force Americans to wait until a new President, a new Congress, and a new year for real economic leadership that will create jobs and lift us out of recession.
With joblessness on the rise, the President must also use his influence among Senate Republicans to help pass legislation that will protect taxpayers while providing short-term assistance to the American automotive industry. The bipartisan bill passed by the House last night requires a restructuring of the auto industry to make it viable, competitive and fully accountable.
