Education and Labor Hearing on Construction Safety Rules

Today the Education and Labor Committee held a hearing, "Is OSHA Failing to Adequately Enforce Construction Safety Rules?" The hearing examined the recent spate of construction and crane incidents in the U.S., particularly in New York City and Las Vegas, which have caused dozens of deaths and injuries. The Committee also examined whether the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is adequately enforcing the law or issuing safety and health regulations to ensure that construction sites are safe.

Judiciary Subcommittee Approves Subpoena for Doug Feith

Last Wednesday the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties held a hearing, "From the Department of Justice to Guantanamo Bay: Administration Lawyers and Administration Interrogation Rules, Part II." Douglas Feith, former Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, was scheduled to appear, but as Subcommittee Chairman Jerrold Nadler explained:
Chairman Nadler: "Despite his prior commitment to testify, this morning Mr. Feith informed the Committee through his counsel that he would not appear today because he is not willing to appear alongside one of our other witnesses.

On the Strong Bipartisan Vote in the House for Medicare Improvements Act

Oversight Hearing on AEY Contracts with the U.S. Government

The Oversight Committee is currently holding a hearing, "Examination of AEY Contracts with the U.S. Government." The hearing will address failures by AEY, Inc., to provide weapons and ammunition under contracts with the United States Government, and the deficiencies within the government that allowed AEY to be awarded these and other contracts. Representatives of the Defense and State Departments will testify.

Oversight Committee Calls for Declassification of Information About U.S. Bases in Iraq

Chairman Henry Waxman of the Oversight Committee sent a letter today requesting that President Bush declassify provisions in the "Joint MNF-I/U.S. Embassy-Baghdad Campaign Plan" that refer to U.S. military bases in Iraq and the timeline for their existence, as well as a GAO report issued today regarding this Joint Campaign Plan.

Lawmakers Will Also Consider "National Security Letters Reform Act"

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-08), Chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties today announced that the Subcommittee will consider a resolution "authorizing the Chairman to issue a subpoena to compel the testimony of Douglas Feith" and will also consider H.R. 3189, the National Security Letters Reform Act of 2007, on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 2:00 P.M.
