Majority Leader Hoyer Responds to the President's Remarks on the EconomyWASHINGTON, DC -- House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning after President Bush made remarks on the economy and other topics at a press conference:
"The President's comments on the economy today clearly demonstrate why his popularity is at record lows in national polls now, and why his Administration will be viewed by historians as a failure. The President has proclaimed that he is the 'Decider,' but this morning all he tried to do is pass the buck to someone else rather than accept responsibility for his Administration's failed economic policies and escalating gas prices.

The Oversight Committee is currently holding a hearing, "Oversight of Defense Department Acquisitions." The hearing will examine the recent report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) titled, "Defense Acquisitions: Assessments of Selected Weapon Programs" (pdf). This report found that the Defense Department's 95 major weapons acquisition programs currently exceed their original budgets by nearly $300 billion dollars and are, on average, 21 months late in delivering these weapons systems to warfighters. Witnesses from the GAO and DOD will testify.

The Supreme Court's decision is disappointing. The Court's decision today places obstacles to the fundamental rights of American citizens--especially the poor, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities--to participate in the electoral process. Having American citizens pay for underlying documents needed for an identification card and travel to distant motor vehicle locations for processing hinders--and diminishes--their right to vote.
The right to vote is a foundation of our democracy. American citizens who wish to vote must be able to do so.
