Our nation faces a significant shortage of affordable housing, and I commend the work of the National Low Income Housing Coalition in publicizing the problem and advocating solutions on behalf of low- and moderate-income families. The Coalition's annual Out of Reach Report offers a statistical framework for understanding the challenges working families face with the rising costs of housing, typically a family's single largest expense.
The report provides a sobering picture of the widening gap between the increasing costs of rental housing and the stagnating wages of working Americans. In showing a detailed picture of higher rental costs in communities across America, the report demonstrates the need for strong federal action to increase the supply of affordable housing.
