Image removed.2008 presents a tremendous opportunity for Democrats and Republicans to shatter the mold and public expectations by working together to achieve bipartisan solutions on key issues. Nowhere is this more critical than in the area of tax reform. America has one of the highest corporate tax rates among industrialized nations and Secretary Paulson has repeatedly spoken of the need to eliminate unfair tax preferences in the code to allow for a reduction in the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 30.5 percent or below.

Image removed.It will take more than one year to restore the damage inflicted by President Bush's misguided policies and priorities. Unfortunately, tonight's speech was largely a recitation of those failed policies, including staying the course in Iraq, making permanent his tax cuts, and inadequately addressing our nation's reliance on fossil fuels.

In order to make the State of our Union stronger, Congress should continue to assert its oversight responsibilities, especially as it helps make Americans safer at home and abroad. We should advance a strategy to strengthen economic development and create new jobs.
