Today the U.S. Congress is sending a strong message that economic pressure on the Sudanese government will continue to intensify until the genocide in Darfur finally comes to an end.

Young people, the religious community, and state governments are leading divestment campaigns all across America. This legislation will empower their efforts and help ensure that money from American citizens will not contribute to a genocidal regime.

The House has passed the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act of 2007 by a vote of 411-0, which passed the Senate by unanimous consent earlier this week. The bill protects states' and investment firms' rights to divest from companies with connections to the government of Sudan. SADA also prohibits federal contracts with such companies. A similar piece of legislation, the Darfur Accountability and Divestment Authorization Act, passed the House earlier this year; this final bill will be sent to the President. The White House has opposed the measure.

The House has just passed a motion to concur in the Senate amendments to H.R. 6, the Energy Independence and Security Act by a vote of 314-100. The House passed the bill on December 6th, and the Senate passed the bill on December 13th. House passage of the bill sends it to the President's desk, and the White House has announced that the President will sign the bill.

Today, the House is debating a motion to concur in the Senate amendments to H.R. 6, the Energy Independence and Security Act. The House passed the bill on December 6th, and the Senate passed the bill on December 13th. House passage of the bill sends it to the President's desk, and the White House has indicated that the President will sign the bill. The legislation:

Strengthens National Security

· Increases vehicle fuel efficiency to 35 miles per gallon in 2020--the first congressional increase in 32 years.

· Slashes U.S. oil consumption by more than 4 million barrels per day by 2030--more than twice our daily imports from the Persian Gulf.

· Expands American-grown biofuels to 36 billion gallons in 2022.

The House has just passed the Veterans Guaranteed Bonus Act of 2007, which will ensure that members of the armed services who are discharged as a result of combat-related wounds receive the full compensation to which they are entitled by the Department of Defense. According to Department of Defense rules, enlistees cannot receive their full enlistment bonus unless they fulfill their entire military obligation. Unfortunately, members of the armed services who are wounded while on active duty are not receiving their full bonuses because their service was prematurely cut short.
