Rep. Waxman, Sen. Kennedy Release New GAO Report on Inclusion of Seniors in Drug Trials

WASHINGTON, DC -- Rep. Henry A. Waxman and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy today released a new GAO report on FDA's inclusion of seniors in clinical drug trials for prescription drugs. The report finds that in several key areas, FDA rules for drug approval fail to guarantee the safety and effectiveness of drugs for seniors.

"Seniors use more drugs than any other age group, but they are not getting enough attention in the drug approval process," said Rep. Waxman. "FDA medical officers need to do a better job assessing the safety and effectiveness of drugs in older populations."

Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House oversight committee, said Thursday that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has issued an order requiring his approval of any corruption investigations of himself or senior ministry officials.

Waxman, D-Calif., said the order essentially grants immunity to al-Maliki and his ministry at a time when fraud and abuse is rampant and hurting reconstruction efforts.

"These are not unfounded allegations," Waxman said. "This is Nouri al-Maliki's edict that no one will be referred to court unless he approves it."

Insuring 10 Million Children

Today the House will consider H.R. 3963, a revised version of H.R. 976, State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Reauthorization which the President vetoed. Like the original bill, this legislation continues to provide health care coverage for 10 million children. However, the revised bill also contains some new provisions to meet concerns that have been raised in the following four areas: 1) high-income children; 2) illegal immigrants; 3) coverage of adults; and 4) children moving from private insurance to SCHIP. Below are highlights of some of the bill's provisions.

The revised bill further clarifies that the legislation is targeted on enrolling low-income children first:

Oversight Hearing on Iraq with Secretary Rice

The Oversight Committee is currently holding a hearing, "The State Department and the Iraq War." Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will testify on the State Department's performance on several significant issues relating to the Iraq war, including the impact of the activities of Blackwater USA and corruption within the Iraqi ministries on the prospects of political reconciliation in Iraq.
