Having returned this afternoon from a bipartisan fact-finding mission to Greenland and European capitals that focused on global warming, I have to say I am disappointed by the President's announcement today. After years of inaction and denial, on the eve of the G-8 Summit, the President has finally acknowledged the severity of the global warming threat and agreed that we need a follow-up agreement to the Kyoto Protocol that he has spent most of his Administration studiously ignoring.

But today's announcement fails to respond to the severity of the crisis that most of the rest of the world has long since recognized. Instead of fresh thinking, the President today just rehashed the same stale proposals he has repeatedly put forward to the international community.

Federal Trade Commission Launches Inquiry Requested by Chairman Miller into Deceptive Lender Marketing Practices

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Federal Trade Commission has launched an inquiry requested by U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA) into the unfair and deceptive practices that lenders use to market their products and services to students. In a letter to Miller today, Deborah Platt Majoras, the commission's chairman, said that the FTC has already begun to look into whether lenders' marketing tactics are in violation of consumer fraud and abuse and debt collection laws. As part of their probe, the FTC is reviewing examples of unfair marketing letters provided by Miller's staff.

NASA Chief Questions Urgency of Global Warming

NPR Morning Edition - May 31, 2007

It has been mentioned that NASA is not spending as much money as it could to study climate change -- global warming -- from space. Are you concerned about global warming?

I'm aware that global warming exists. I understand that the bulk of scientific evidence accumulated supports the claim that we've had about a one degree centigrade rise in temperature over the last century to within an accuracy of 20 percent. I'm also aware of recent findings that appear to have nailed down -- pretty well nailed down the conclusion that much of that is manmade. Whether that is a longterm concern or not, I can't say.

"'The decision by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez not to renew the license of Radio Caracas Television in order to silence criticism is exactly the kind of action that raises concern about his leadership. President Chavez should know that efforts to suppress the media will not only ultimately fail, but are also a detriment to one of the pillars democracy: freedom of expression. He should reconsider this ill-advised decision."

The United States Senate has already called upon the Organization of American States to respond appropriately, and the House may consider similar action soon.
