Congressman Rahm Emanuel Delivers Democratic Radio Address

This morning, Congressman Rahm Emanuel (IL-5), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, delivered the Democratic Radio Address. In his address, he discusses the need to provide tax relief for the middle-class. In 1969, Congress created the Alternative Minimum Tax, or AMT, in response to the fact that 155 of the wealthiest families in America were able to avoid paying any federal taxes by using loopholes, deductions, and exclusions. Over time, the AMT has morphed into a tax on the middle class, and in particular middle-class parents, who are not using any tax avoidance strategies. For this reason, a better name for this tax is the "Parent Penalty," as it harshly penalizes couples for deciding to have children.

The Alternative Minimum Tax is a parallel tax system that requires taxpayers to calculate their taxes a second time.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she will not back down on war funding differences with Bush

Associated Press - April 13, 2007

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" she has no plans to back down on her differences with the president over funding for the war on terror.

Bush "wants a blank check on the war," she said Thursday on the late night TV talk show.

The nation's first woman House speaker steered away from questions about the 2008 presidential race and spoke cautiously about her relationship with the president.

"I respect the office he holds, and I respect him," she said.

Education and Labor Committee to Hold Equal Pay Hearing on April 24

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- On Tuesday, April 24, the House Education and Labor Committee will hold a hearing on the need for legislation to close the pay gap between men and women. April 24 is "Equal Pay Day," which signifies the number of days into a new year that women have to work before earning what men made by December 31. Women continue to earn only about three quarters as much as men for equal work despite women's continued career and educational advancements.
