"Last week the House of Representatives on a bipartisan vote passed an emergency supplemental spending bill. The Senate is poised to pass its version of the bill as soon as later today. Both bills contain much needed funding for our troops and our veterans. Both bills also chart a new course forward in Iraq. Given the importance and urgency of this legislation to our troops and our security, we are quite disturbed by your insistence to veto it. Rather than work with the Congress to develop a bill you could sign, you apparently intend to follow a political strategy that would needlessly delay funding for our troops."

MSHA Needs to be Held Accountable to Enforce Mine Safety Laws, Witnesses Tell the Education and Labor Committee

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Promises made to coal miners and their families to improve mine safety have not yet been met, witnesses told the House Education and Labor Committee today.

Forty-seven coal miners died in mining accidents in the U.S. in 2006, the largest number of fatalities since 1995. In response to those tragedies, Congress passed the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act. The mining industry promised to make worker safety a top priority.

Today, the House will consider HR 1538, the Wounded Warrior Assistance Act. The bill addresses the problems brought to light at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and other military health care facilities by improving access to quality medical care, beginning the process of restoring the integrity and efficiency of the disability evaluation system, taking steps to cut bureaucratic red-tape and improving the transition of wounded service members from the Armed Forces to the VA system.

The exposure of Walter Reed has led to evaluations of other DOD and VA health care facilities -- evaluations showing Walter Reed is not an isolated case.
