"Washington, D.C - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on a news story in The Los Angeles Times today that American military planners have begun planning a strategy for Iraq that includes a gradual withdrawal of forces and a renewed emphasis on training Iraqi fighters:
'The transition of the mission of U.S. forces from combat to training is an essential element of redeploying our troops and is at the heart of the Iraq proposal the House Appropriations Committee will consider this week. The fact that the Department of Defense is making plans to support a decision to do the same thing is an extremely significant development in the national debate on the best way forward in Iraq."

It is a disservice to our military personnel for President Bush and Vice President Cheney to continue to advocate for an open-ended commitment in Iraq, while brushing aside the advice of military leaders and the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, all of whom argue that the war in Iraq cannot be resolved militarily but only through diplomatic, economic and political means. As the Vice President's remarks today prove again, the Administration's answer to continuing violence in Iraq is more troops and more treasure from the American people.
The House Appropriations Committee will consider a plan this week that will take Iraq policy in a new direction. The bill will hold the Iraqi government to the President's own performance benchmarks, reduce the number of U.S.

As has been widely reported, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will hold a hearing on the disclosure of CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson's identity this Friday. But as Speaker Pelosi has stated, the recent trial's "guilty verdicts are not solely about the acts of one individual." Chairman Henry Waxman has been persistent in his attempts to find the facts regarding the underlying issue, namely the President's claim that Iraq sought uranium from Niger, which was based on forged documents.

President Bush's Iraq policies weaken our military's readiness, dishonor our nation's promises to our veterans, and fail to hold the Iraqi government accountable for overdue reforms.
By threatening to veto the House's military funding bill, the President is walking away from his promise to the American people. The President has vowed to veto a bill that contains his own reform benchmarks for performance by the Iraqi government, our Defense Department's own standards for troop readiness, and America's promise to our veterans.
With his veto threat, the President offers only an open-ended commitment to a war without end that dangerously ignores the repeated warnings of military leaders, including the commander in Iraq, General Petraeus, who declared in Baghdad this week that the conflict cannot be resolved militarily.
