Pelosi: Bush Lacks Power to Invade Iran

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that President Bush lacks the authority to invade Iran without specific approval from Congress, a fresh challenge to the commander in chief on the eve of a symbolic vote critical of his troop buildup in Iraq.

Pelosi, D-Calif., noted that Bush consistently said he supports a diplomatic resolution to differences with Iran "and I take him at his word."

Oversight Hearing on Iraq Reconstruction

The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is holding a hearing on Iraq Reconstruction at this moment, and the three top auditors overseeing work in Iraq will provide new information about the status of Iraq reconstruction projects and troop support contracts. The hearing will examine whether the findings of these auditors should affect Congress' assessment of the President's new request for additional taxpayer dollars.

Unfortunately, reports suggest that the President is once again sending troops into Iraq without adequate supplies and support. Democrats, who join the overwhelming majority of Americans in opposing the President's escalation, believe the men and women serving bravely in Iraq should receive the equipment and support they need and deserve."

The United States Department of Commerce released its 2006 annual trade deficit figures today revealing another record-breaking year of $764 billion.
