I want to bring in the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi because, in just about two hours, the key group of bipartisan congressional leaders known as the Gang of Eight will be briefed by the Trump Administration officials, getting an update on reports that Russia offered cash bounties to the Taliban to kill U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Fifty-six years ago, our nation achieved one of the greatest legislative triumphs in our history when President Lyndon Johnson signed the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law. At the signing ceremony, President Johnson said, ‘those who founded our country knew that freedom would be secure only if each generation fought to renew and enlarge its meaning.’ On this anniversary, we celebrate generations of Americans who fought to advance progress and recognize this generation of courageous Americans who are peacefully protesting to secure the blessings of equality and justice enshrined in the Civil Rights Act.

We have reached 15 straight weeks of more than 1 million Americans applying for unemployment insurance and tens of thousands of new coronavirus cases reported each day, as the critical lifelines that are helping to keep American families and communities above water expire. Economists, scientists and even the Chair of the Fed have indicated that if we don’t deliver the investments in The Heroes Act, we will end up in a worse place economically and health wise.
