Democrats are committed to fiscal responsibility and to ensuring that government lives within its means. With Big Oil raking in record profits, House Democrats offered a Motion to Recommit to the House Republican short-term spending bill this afternoon making a responsible cut to the budget: putting an end to taxpayer-funded subsidies to large oil companies. Repealing these subsidies would save taxpayers tens of billions over the next decade and even ex-Shell CEO John Hofmeister agrees saying "with high oil prices, such subsidies are not necessary."

The GOP's "So Be It" spending bill would destroy jobs and slow our economic recovery. Now 320 of the nation's leading economists have signed a letter opposing the GOP's cuts to federal investment – calling these cuts "short-sighted" and a threat to "our economy's long-term economic competitiveness and strength of our current economic recovery":

In a analysis released today, Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics and former adviser to Sen. John McCain, found that the GOP "So Be It" spending bill will destroy 700,000 jobs and stall our economic recovery. From the Washington Post:

Democrats are committed to living within our means while investing in the future, cutting the deficit, and continuing to aggressively attack waste, fraud and abuse. The GOP "So Be It" spending bill (H.R. 1) that passed on February 19th fails to meet these goals, and cuts spending on the backs of middle class families. And even worse, the GOP bill will cost more than 800,000 private and public jobs according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Economic Policy Institute.

Democrats and Republicans must work together to avoid a government shutdown. Americans should not be denied the critical services they have already paid for.
In order to reduce the deficit, Congress passed and the President signed into law $41 billion in cuts included in the current CR that is funding the government. Republicans want to cut an additional $4 billion, which includes stripping support for some pressing educational challenges without redirecting these critical resources to meet the educational needs of our children. This is not a good place to start.

More than 75,000 of our nation's veterans were homeless in January 2009 and over the course of the year nearly twice that many (136,000) spent at least one night in a homeless shelter. The GOP 'So Be It' spending bill passed at 4:40 am last Saturday eliminates housing vouchers to homeless veterans.
