As news was breaking that the Obama Administration got BP to agree to expedite claim payments to American families and small businesses that have been devastated by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, House Republican Leader John Boehner sided with the Chamber of Commerce and declared that American taxpayers should bailout the Big Oil giant.

This afternoon, Speaker Pelosi named Members to the conference committee that will complete comprehensive Wall Street reform legislation. The House conferees will work with Senate conferees to send a strong bill to the President for his signature that achieves several key principles: strong consumer protections; transparency and accountability for the financial sector; an end to taxpayer-financed bailouts; and tough oversight of Wall Street to ensure it never again costs us 8 million jobs on Main Street. A Washington Post/ABC News poll released this morning shows more Americans trust Democrats over Republicans to handle the nation's biggest problems and 60% are "dissatisfied" or "angry" with Congressional Republicans' ideas:

Under the Affordable Care Act, seniors who fall into the Medicare prescription drug "donut hole" coverage gap this year will receive a $250 rebate check. An estimated 4 million seniors will see this benefit this year. (Beginning in 2011, there is a 50% discount on brand-name prescription drugs in the donut hole and it's completely closed by 2020.)
This week, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is sending out the first round of $250 checks to seniors who have fallen into the donut hole.

Twenty one years ago, thousands of Chinese students, workers, and citizens assembled in Tiananmen Square to bravely speak out. They called for the elimination of corruption. They called for an acceleration of democratic reform, freedom of speech and assembly. They called for a dialogue with China's leaders on how to make progress.
We remember with sadness and outrage how China's military was unleashed on its own people.

We continue to see growing signs of economic recovery, resulting from the economic policies of the Democratic-led Congress and the Obama Administration responding to the Bush Recession and the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. More must be done to create and save jobs, but today's news shows the economy continues to move in the right direction--toward sustained growth as unemployment rates fell in 90% of the nation's largest metro areas last month, and car and home sales rose:

The Affordable Care Act will help ensure that all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care and significantly reduce long-term health care costs. Congressional Republicans continue to call for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, including the essential protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions, and would return American workers, their families and small businesses to an uncertain future in a broken system with coverage gaps, denied care, and skyrocketing costs.
