Today marks a critical step toward the responsible withdrawal of American forces by December 2011 and the end of the war in Iraq, a war that tragically began more than six long years ago. This action is in keeping with the pledge made by President Obama and the Status of Forces agreement with the Iraqi government.
Last month during my visit to Iraq, I met with U.S. military commanders, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Malaki, and Iraqi Parliament Speaker al-Samarraie.

This week, the House will consider the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454) to revitalize our economy by creating millions of new jobs, increase our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and preserve our planet by reducing the pollution that causes global warming.
Two separate analyses released this week found the American Clean Energy and Security Act would dramatically reduce carbon pollution and support robust economic growth for a minimal cost.

China's official Xinhua news agency has reported that human rights leader Liu Xiaobo has been formally arrested on the criminal charge of "inciting subversion of state power." Liu Xiaobo was one of the original signers of Charter 08, an online petition calling for new policies to improve human rights and democracy in China. It now has more than 8,000 signatories, a number of whom have been harassed and intimidated by Chinese authorities.

Today, the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) released an analysis of the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454) finding that as a result of energy efficiency measures in the legislation, consumers will spend around 7% less in 2020 on their utility bills and that the overall impact on the average household would be 22 to 30 cents per day (or $80 to $111 per year).

Today, President Obama has joined Congress in taking a giant step toward making America healthier. This bipartisan legislation grants the FDA the authority to regulate tobacco products and marketing, which will help to protect public health, prevent disease, and stop tobacco companies from hooking America's children on their deadly product.
