Tonight, Congressman Mike Quigley was sworn in to represent the 5th District of Illinois after being elected April 7, 2009 in special election to replace Rahm Emanuel:

Representative Quigley brings the House to 433 Members, with two vacancies still remaining for the 32nd District of California, vacated by now-Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, and the 20th District of New York, vacated by now-Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

This afternoon, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act into law - launching a new era of service that will give Americans of all ages the opportunity to help our nation recover and make progress on education, health care, energy and other key goals by volunteering.

Today, the Congressional Oversight Panel held a hearing with Treasury Secretary Geithner.

I applaud President Obama's continued commitment to fiscal responsibility and share in his commitment to ensuring that taxpayer dollars are protected and spent wisely.

House committees are already conducting the hearings and reviews which I asked them to initiate in February in order to root out any waste, fraud, abuse or obsolescence in the budgets of the departments and agencies under their jurisdiction.

On this Tax Day, less than three months after President Obama's inauguration, Democrats in Congress have taken key steps toward fulfilling his promise to restore balance to our tax code so that middle--income families pay less in taxes and the wealthiest pay their fair share--after years of getting so many tax breaks. This will strengthen the middle class and help to put our economy back on track.

Today, President Obama, Secretary Gates and Secretary Shinseki announced that the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are creating lifetime electronic records for service members and veterans - streamlining the transition of health care records between the DOD and the VA.

Today marks the start of the 15th anniversary of the genocide that occurred in Rwanda where an estimated 800,000 women, men and children were murdered. This evening in Rwanda's capital, Kigali, an official hundred day commemoration of the genocide will begin. As part of this event, 10,000 candles will be lit to remember the victims and express support for the survivors in the national stadium. Speaker Pelosi lights a candle in commemoration:
