Darlene Hooley has served the people of Oregon with great distinction and will be missed by all of us in Congress.

Congresswoman Hooley first came to politics as a mother motivated to effect change for children. Over her three decades of public service, she has always maintained that perspective, knowing it is our fundamental responsibility to make our nation stronger for generations to come.

The Armed Services Committee has just concluded a hearing on the defense budget for the coming fiscal year. Reps. Ellen Tauscher (CA-10) and Joe Courtney (CT-02) questioned Defense Secretary Robert Gates on the President's signing statements, permanent bases in Iraq, and the Administration's long term plans in Iraq:
Rep. Tauscher: "Two things concern me, one are the signing statements that the President has been signing and the Status of Forces agreement that we're apparently negotiating with the Iraqis.
