The new Census report illustrates why Congress needs to immediately pass legislation to strengthen the State Child Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to ensure that more of America's children have health insurance. The report shows that for the second year in a row, the number of uninsured children increased, leaving a total of 8.7 million children without health care coverage. That is unacceptable.

It says in the Bible that when there is injustice in the world, the poorest people and those with the least power, are injured the most. That was demonstrated two years ago, when Hurricane Katrina reached our shores and a natural disaster was compounded by a disaster of man. It has been the responsibility of people of conscience -- particularly elected officials -- to help right that injustice. That has been the work of Democrats in Congress for the survivors of both Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The resignation of Attorney General Gonzales is long overdue. The rampant politicization of federal law enforcement that occurred under his tenure seriously eroded public confidence in our justice system.

The President must now restore credibility to the office of the Attorney General. Given the serious loss of public trust and the disarray at the Department of Justice, the American people must have absolute confidence in the integrity of the next Attorney General as the nation's chief law enforcement officer and as defender of our constitution independent of political influence.

Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel issued the following statement after Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announced his resignation:

"Alberto Gonzales is the first Attorney General who thought the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth were three different things. The President should nominate a new Attorney General whose loyalty to the Constitution is greater than his loyalty to the Republican Party."
