The American people lost and the special interests won today after Senate Republicans blocked the Medicare prescription drug bill.

The Senate vote occurred on the same day that Families USA issued a new report finding that drug prices are going up despite the repeated assertions by the Bush Administration that Medicare Part D is bringing drug prices down. The report finds that for the top 15 drugs prescribed for seniors, the median Medicare Part D price has skyrocketed in the last year, growing by 9.2 percent -- almost four times the inflation rate of 2.4 percent.

Speaker Pelosi spoke on the House floor this morning, giving her condolences regarding the tragedy at Virginia Tech:

Mr. Speaker, it is with deep sadness that Congress today recognizes the great tragedy that stuck our country and the community of Virginia Tech on Monday. We offer our condolences to the many who now grieve.

I want to particularly extend my condolences to our colleagues here for the sorrow that has taken place in their state.

Speaker Pelosi released the following statement this afternoon following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold the ban on partial birth abortions:

I am disappointed. Criminalizing doctors for performing medically necessary procedures to save a woman's life or protect her health is wrong. The Court's decision is a significant step backwards.

(Washington, DC)-House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) scheduled a meeting of the Committee for TOMORROW, April 18, at 10:15 a.m. to consider granting immunity to ex-Department of Justice-White House Liaison Monica Goodling, in order to secure her testimony about the U.S. Attorney matter. Two-thirds of the Committee must approve immunity.
