Today, the House will consider H.R. 1433, the D.C. House Voting Rights Act. This bipartisan bill, co-sponsored by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), secures voting rights in the House for the District of Columbia. Specifically, the bill permanently expands the U.S. House of Representatives from 435 to 437 seats. The two-seat increase will provide a vote to the District of Columbia and a new, at-large seat through the 112th Congress to the state next entitled to increase its congressional representation.
House Judiciary Subcommittee Investigates Politicization at Justice Department's Civil Rights Division(Washington, DC) - Tomorrow, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties will hold an oversight hearing titled,"Changing Tides: Exploring the Current State of Civil Rights Enforcement within the Department of Justice" at 10 a.m. in 2237 Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing will investigate allegations of politicization in the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division - which have led to a decrease in enforcement of civil rights statutes, particularly in the areas of voting and employment.

On Tuesday, March 13, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 242.66 points, its second largest single day decline in four years, because of the subprime mortgage market.

Judiciary Subcommittee Authorizes Chairman Conyers to Issue Subpoenas in US Attorney Investigation(Washington, DC)- Today, the House Judiciary Commercial and Administrative Law Subcommittee (CAL) voted to authorize the full committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) to issue subpoenas for current and former White House and Justice Department officials Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, William Kelley, Scott Jennings and Kyle Sampson, as well as documents that the Committee has not yet received.
