San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on coordinated sanctions from the United States, Canada, Britain and the European Union on China over Beijing's campaign of persecution against Uyghur Muslims, which has been labeled a crime against humanity by the Congressional-Executive Commission on China:
"The Biden Administration's coordinated sanctions on China are a strong and resounding step to hold China accountable for its barbaric atrocities against the Uyghur people. These sanctions make absolutely clear that America and the international community stand as one to defend the rights and dignity of the Uyghur people from China's abuse.
San Francisco — Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the retirement of Congressman Filemon Vela of Texas at the end of the 117th Congress:
"Congressman Filemon Vela is a proud son of Brownsville, who has dedicated decades to helping advance justice, opportunity and prosperity for the people of the Rio Grande Valley. His leadership in the Congress will be missed when he departs.
"Over a lifetime of public service, in both the Congress and the courtroom, Congressman Vela has fought For The People. On the Agriculture Committee, he has been a force for good for Texas and America, helping ensure that producers and farmers can continue to feed America and hungry families can put food on the table. His patriotic leadership on the Armed Services Committee has helped keep the American people safe, while honoring our nation's values.
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi held her weekly press conference today in the Capitol Visitor Center. Below are the Speaker's remarks:
Speaker Pelosi. Good morning, everyone.
As we deliver the benefits of the American Rescue Plan, we're hard at work to lower health care costs and expand access to care, which we have seen a great need for during the spread of this pandemic.
On Tuesday, we will observe the eleventh anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act. At that time and since, I've said that that was a great pillar of economic and health security for the American people, on a par with Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act.
In this rescue plan, we have some initiatives to expand the Affordable Care Act, and that's why I'm so pleased to be joined by three of our colleagues.
