San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in honor of César Chávez Day, which commemorates the civil and labor rights leader's birthday, March 31, 1927:
"On César Chávez Day, our nation honors an icon and an unyielding voice for justice and opportunity, whose visionary leadership for America's farm workers helped advance a brighter future for all hard-working Americans. In relentlessly pursuing fairness, security and dignity for the men and women who pick our food and feed our communities, Chávez ignited a movement around the world and taught us all the true meaning of justice.
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi today announced her appointment of Major General William J. Walker as House Sergeant-at-Arms, the first Black American to serve in this position.
"It is my honor to appoint District of Columbia National Guard Major General William J. Walker to serve as the 38th Sergeant-at-Arms for the House of Representatives," said Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "The role of Sergeant-at-Arms is foundational to the functioning of Congress. Since the earliest days of our Founding, the Sergeant-at-Arms has been tasked with the essential responsibility of securing the People's House and ensuring that it can continue to perform its solemn Constitutional duty: to serve the American people and advance our democracy."
