House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today sent a letter to President Trump requesting his Administration prepare to fly flags at half staff on all public buildings in the country on the heartbreaking day America's COVID-19 death toll reaches 100,000 lives. The letter comes as the United States reaches nearly 94,000 American lives lost to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Justice Department’s continued delay is part of a pattern of the Administration hiding the truth from the public. The American people deserve the truth.”

The Heroes Act addresses hunger in America, which has always been a challenge to the conscience of our country. The coronavirus has made this challenge worse, as millions of families struggle to put food on the table due to this unprecedented threat to their lives and livelihoods. Surveys show that 1 in 5 mothers of children under 12 say that their children are not getting enough food during the coronavirus crisis – three times the rate during the depths of the Great Recession.

Nearly 100,000 Americans have died from coronavirus, yet the GOP Senate is wasting precious time and taxpayer dollars smearing the President’s political rivals, while telling hungry families and laid-off workers to just ‘take a pause.’

In light of the attached notification by the Sergeant-at-Arms, in consultation with the Office of Attending Physician, that a public health emergency is in effect due to a novel coronavirus, I am hereby designating a “covered period” pursuant to section 1(a) of House Resolution 965.
