Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent the following letter today to President Trump regarding the firing of State Department Inspector General Steve Linick. Speaker Pelosi asked for more information on the grounds of the Inspector General’s removal, especially in light of revelations that Mr. Linick’s firing may have been linked to an investigation into the approval of an $8 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia opposed by the Congress.

Good afternoon, graduates. Thank you for the immense honor of addressing you – the Smith College Class of 2020 – on this very special occasion.

One year ago, as we joined the world to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, House Democrats took a momentous step toward finally and fully ending discrimination against LGBTQ Americans by passing H.R. 5, the Equality Act. This transformative legislation brought our nation closer to its founding promise of liberty and justice for all by ensuring all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, are treated equally under the law – not just in the workplace, but in every place. Yet, for 365 days, Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to allow a vote on this critical legislation.

As I have often said, the House Democratic Caucus is a remarkable source of intellect, integrity and courage for the good of the American people. Once again, the excellence of House Democrats was demonstrated in the development, debate and passage of The Heroes Act.

The President’s late-night, weekend firing of the State Department Inspector General has accelerated his dangerous pattern of retaliation against the patriotic public servants charged with conducting oversight on behalf of the American people.

My colleagues, a horrible virus has made a vicious attack on the lives and the livelihood of the American people, and indeed on the life of our democracy. We have, again, a momentous opportunity and, therefore – a great opportunity to defeat the virus and to do so in a way that brings us together and takes us forward to a stronger America.
