Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the Trump Administration's final rule weakening car pollution standards, which is estimated to increase carbon emissions by 2.2 billion metric tons and cost Americans a total of $300 billion:

"The Trump Administration's anti-science decision to gut fuel standards will unleash massive amounts of pollution into the air at the worst possible time. The American people need and expect strong action to protect public health during the coronavirus pandemic, not corporate giveaways that devastate the air that we breathe.

Today, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA-12) and Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17) sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Small Business Administrator Jovita Carranza urging the Trump Administration to consider startups in their regulatory guidance when implementing the CARES Act relief package. As representatives of the Bay Area’s largest innovation hubs, the Members are requesting that startups be considered for some of the same relief coverage as other small businesses amidst the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis.

Congressional Democrats transformed the CARES Act from corporations-focused to workers-first. The legislation requires that taxpayer dollars given to industry go to workers’ paychecks and benefits, not be used for CEO bonuses, stock buybacks or dividends. Unfortunately, the President has made clear that he intends to disregard critical oversight provisions that hold the Administration accountable to the law.

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the President's much-delayed and limited step to use the Defense Production Act to address shortages of ventilators but not of other key materials needed to combat the coronavirus pandemic:

"The news that the President will finally begin to use the Defense Production Act to mass produce ventilators is an important but seriously belated step.

"Much more must be done. The President must use the full powers of this law to address the dire, widespread shortage of materials required to fight this pandemic, including diagnostic test supplies, masks and other personal protective equipment.
