"With the arrival of spring comes the celebration of Nowruz, as Iranian Americans join millions around the world to mark the new year. Nowruz offers a new beginning and an opportunity to reflect on the year that's been and look forward with hope for the year to come.

"Today, we recognize the innumerable contributions that Iranian Americans make to our country. For generations, these proud, hard-working men and women have shared their vibrant culture and traditions and in the process made America more American. Their vision, spirit and unwavering determination have strengthened and enriched our communities, particularly in California where we are grateful to be home to more than half of our nation's Iranian American community.

"House and Senate Democrats are united in our commitment to using all tools available to help fight the coronavirus outbreak like the health crisis it is and make sure all workers are protected from the loss of a paycheck or that no family falls into financial ruin because of this pandemic. Democrats support a plan that puts ‘Workers First'. That means taking bold action to help workers and small businesses first by greatly increasing unemployment insurance and Medicaid, making massive investments to help small businesses survive, expanding paid sick and family leave and putting money directly into the hands of those who need it most.

"At the same time, Chairperson Zoe Lofgren of the Committee on House Administration informed Members that her committee is issuing a memo on additional resources for tele-conferencing.

San Francisco – Speaker Pelosi today called on President Trump to use the Defense Production Act to address widespread shortages of key materials during the coronavirus epidemic, including ventilators, diagnostic test supplies, masks and other personal protective equipment. Last week, 57 House Democrats wrote a letter to the President asking him to invoke the Defense Production Act. Yesterday evening, President Trump tweeted that he had signed the Defense Production Act but was not yet invoking its powers.

"Right now, shortages of critical medical and personal protective equipment are harming our ability to fight the coronavirus epidemic, endangering frontline workers and making it harder to care for those who fall ill.

Over the weekend, Democrats staved off the Administration’s attempt to eliminate workers’ health care guaranteed under the Family and Medical Leave Act mandate, upholding the bedrock promise that workers are entitled to the continuation of group health coverage, wages and job security when they use long-term leave. We also successfully secured a refundable tax credit for employers who provide that health care during their family medical leave.
