Thank you very much, Leader Schumer, for bringing us all together here.  It’s an honor to be here with you, with the Ranking Members on the Senate side of the Budget Committee, Mr. [Bernie] Sanders and on the Finance Committee, Mr. [Ron] Wyden. 

Today, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to Speaker Ryan calling for the creation of a Select Committee on Gun Violence and to bring the King-Thompson Background Check Legislation to the House Floor for a vote following the attack in Las Vegas, the largest mass shooting in our history.

This morning, our nation awoke to news of the largest mass shooting in our history.  All of America grieves for the innocent men and women whose lives were cruelly cut short by this tragedy, and our prayers are with the families of those wounded and missing.

Secretary Price should never have been in this role in the first place.  The American people deserve a Secretary of Health and Human Services who believes in health care for all Americans. 

A budget should be a statement of values, but the chief purpose of this radical Republican budget is to hand tax breaks to billionaires on the backs of hard-working Americans and add trillions of dollars to the debt.  This extreme budget also slashes vital lifelines of the American people by an astounding $5.4 trillion – including Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security Disability Insurance.

Today’s searing Tax Policy Center analysis confirms that the Ryan-McConnell framework is a monumental giveaway to the wealthiest at the expense of hard-working middle class Americans.
