Press Release
December 7, 2016
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after reports that retired General John Kelly will be nominated to be the next Secretary of Homeland Security:

"Some of the President-elect's most vicious proposals fall under the responsibility of the Secretary of Homeland Security: the special deportation force to tear apart families, the massive wall that Mexico will never pay for, and the chilling suggestion of a government registry of Muslims.

"We hope that General Kelly is willing to stand up for facts, families and the Constitution.  America will not be made great by dragging parents away from their children, by squandering billions of dollars on a wall that does little to secure the border, or by rejecting freedom of religion and echoing the darkest chapters of persecution."

"Today, thousands of young DREAMers are stuck in a terrible limbo, left to dread the possibility of President Trump deporting them from the only home they have ever known.  These young people are American in every way but on paper, and all they have asked for is the opportunity to live, work and contribute to the country they love.

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on reports Republicans planned to add language to the Continuing Resolution that would set up expedited procedures to waive the requirement enshrined in the National Security Act of 1947 prohibiting individuals who have served in the military more recently than the 7 year gap to serve as Secretary of Defense:

"Civilian leadership of the military has been a cornerstone of our democracy since the Founders, and for good reason.  In the whole history of the Department of Defense, the only Defense Secretary ever given a waiver was then-Secretary of State, General George Marshall – who was provided an individual waiver in a stand-alone bill approved by the Congress.

"The American people are entitled to regular order and thoughtful scrutiny of nominees and any potential waivers.
