“Economists and experts have demonstrated how unemployment insurance injects demand into our markets, how every dollar invested in UI expands the economy by $1.52, and how extending this vital lifeline could produce as many as 300,000 jobs. Now that the budget is set and the New Year is set to begin, we must act without further delay to extend unemployment investments that strengthen our families and our economy.”

“UCSF’s loss is the Gates Foundation’s gain. Though Chancellor Desmond-Hellmann will be missed on campus, we know she is the perfect fit to lead the foundation’s efforts to empower men, women, and children around the world to lead healthy, productive, and successful lives. I wish her and her family all the best in the future, and look forward to continuing our work to ensure UCSF always leads the way in science and research.”

“With the Affordable Care Act having already made it possible for more than 25 million people on traditional Medicare to receive free preventive services, like annual wellness visits or mammograms, in 2013, this law continues to improve access to high-quality care and lower costs for American seniors and families nationwide. But instead of working with Democrats to strengthen the health law, House Republicans continue to push to repeal the Affordable Care Act and raise costs for the millions on Medicare. Republicans should stop trying to roll back these critical protections and savings for America’s seniors.”

“The Affordable Care Act is working, and millions of Americans are seeing the proof in their pocketbooks. This year, insurers sent 8.5 million consumers an average rebate of approximately $100 per family. In California, more than 1.4 million people got a check back from their insurance company. With this law paying dividends for so many Americans, Republicans should stop trying to repeal these fundamental consumer protections, and work with Democrats to strengthen the Affordable Care Act for all Americans.”

“In California, I have to say, we take some ownership of the Mandela. The whole issue, whether it was stopping investments in South Africa and the rest – Ron Dellums was the champion of this; we're proud of the role that we played in the great state of California. But it really is, again, in that same humility that is a virtue that we should all possess, that I come to this floor to even talk about such a great – we went from a village to a leader of a movement, to prison, to the presidency of South Africa."
