Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a brief a press availability this morning with Governors Mike Rounds of South Dakota, Jim Douglas of Vermont, and Chris Gregoire of Washington before their meeting in the Capitol to discuss health care reform. Below are their remarks:
Speaker Pelosi. It's really an honor indeed to welcome three very distinguished governors to The Speaker's Office - Governor Rounds of South Dakota, Governor Douglas of Vermont, and Governor Gregoire of Washington state.
The Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act (HR 1016) authorizes Congress to approve investments in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical care one year in advance to provide time for the VA to plan how to deliver the best care to an increasing number of veterans with increasingly complex medical conditions. Chairman Filner explains:
Speaker Pelosi:
Moving to a clean energy economy and transitioning off foreign oil will create whole new industries and as many as 3 to 5 million clean energy jobs. The energy efficiency provisions alone in the bill will generate 650,000 jobs per year by 2030 and dollar for dollar, investments in a clean energy economy will create four times as many jobs as investments in the oil and gas industry.
All Americans have benefitted from the oversight of the FDA on foods that we eat and medicines we take. Yet, despite the fact that tobacco is one of the deadliest products in America, the FDA has had no authority to regulate it. Today, this new law corrects that wrong.
