Pelosi Statement on the Arrest of Chinese Human Rights Leader Liu Xiaobo

"The decision by the Chinese government to formally arrest Liu Xiaobo deserves the full condemnation from the international community. Liu's arrest for peacefully criticizing his government and advocating for human rights violates provisions in China's constitution as well as international human rights standards. It has also been reported that Chinese authorities have decided to bar one of Liu Xiaobo's lawyers from representing him, a move without apparent legal basis."

Strengthening Health Care for Our Veterans

This afternoon, the House passed two key measures for our veterans -- HR 1016 to ensure sufficient, timely and predictable veterans funding and HR 1211 to expand VA health care services for the 1.8 million women who have served our country.

The Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act (HR 1016) authorizes Congress to approve investments in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical care one year in advance to provide time for the VA to plan how to deliver the best care to an increasing number of veterans with increasingly complex medical conditions. EPA Offers New Analysis Of Clean Energy Jobs Bill

Today, the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) released an analysis of the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454) finding that as a result of energy efficiency measures in the legislation, consumers will spend around 7% less in 2020 on their utility bills and that the overall impact on the average household would be 22 to 30 cents per day (or $80 to $111 per year).

House Consideration of the American Clean Energy and Security Act This Week

The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (HR 2454) was filed with the Rules Committee last night and expected to be considered by the House on Friday. The legislation will revitalize our economy by creating millions of new jobs, increase our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and preserve our planet by reducing the pollution that causes global warming.

Moving to a clean energy economy and transitioning off foreign oil will create whole new industries and as many as 3 to 5 million clean energy jobs. The energy efficiency provisions alone in the bill will generate 650,000 jobs per year by 2030 and dollar for dollar, investments in a clean energy economy will create four times as many jobs as investments in the oil and gas industry.

President Obama Signs the Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act

Today, President Obama has joined Congress in taking a giant step toward making America healthier. This bipartisan legislation grants the FDA the authority to regulate tobacco products and marketing, which will help to protect public health, prevent disease, and stop tobacco companies from hooking America's children on their deadly product.

All Americans have benefitted from the oversight of the FDA on foods that we eat and medicines we take. Yet, despite the fact that tobacco is one of the deadliest products in America, the FDA has had no authority to regulate it. Today, this new law corrects that wrong.
