"Since 1982, the annual Congressional Art Competition has provided an opportunity for high school students across the country to exhibit their creativity and compete for a chance to represent their Congressional district and exhibit their artwork in the Capitol. This year's local competition was hosted by the San Francisco Unified School District during the annual Young at Art festival displaying more than 2,000 pieces of art in at the DeYoung Museum located in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park."

Today, the House passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454) to revitalize our economy by creating millions of new jobs, increase our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and preserve our planet by reducing the pollution that causes global warming.

MYTH: The bill will raise energy costs, imposing a hidden energy tax of $3,100 per year.
FACT: The EPA found the overall impact on the average household would be 22 to 30 cents per day ($80 to $111 per year)--or less than the cost of a postage stamp a day. This does not take into account the household energy costs savings from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act estimated of up to $98 per year.Congressional Republicans requested a CBO analysis of the bill that shows an average cost around 48 cents per day for the average household in 2020 ($175 per year) -- 18 times smaller than what the House GOP's been claiming for months -- and still not including efficiency savings. In fact, household savings generated from greater efficiency in appliances and homes are estimated to total over $4,000 a year by 2030. [ACEEE]

This week, the House will consider the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454) to revitalize our economy by creating millions of new jobs, increase our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and preserve our planet by reducing the pollution that causes global warming.
Two separate analyses released this week found the American Clean Energy and Security Act would dramatically reduce carbon pollution and support robust economic growth for a minimal cost. After months of exaggerations by opponents of the bill, the two reports projected costs 18 to 40 times smaller than partisan claims:

“Naval Station Treasure Island was first identified for closure in 1993. Completion of the process to transfer this land from the Navy to the City and County of San Francisco will strengthen the local economy and is long overdue. Thanks to the magnificent leadership of House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton of Missouri, language is included in this year's National Defense Authorization Act that will significantly accelerate the transfer process for Treasure Island and dozens of similarly situated former bases across the country."

China's official Xinhua news agency has reported that human rights leader Liu Xiaobo has been formally arrested on the criminal charge of "inciting subversion of state power." Liu Xiaobo was one of the original signers of Charter 08, an online petition calling for new policies to improve human rights and democracy in China. It now has more than 8,000 signatories, a number of whom have been harassed and intimidated by Chinese authorities. While in China last month, Speaker Pelosi hand delivered a letter calling for the release of Liu Xiaobo and certain individuals detained or imprisoned solely for exercising internationally-recognized rights guaranteed to them under Chinese law.
