Today, House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank formally introduced a bill to implement President Obama's plan to strengthen consumer protections as a part of broader financial regulatory restructuring. The bill would establish a new independent agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Agency, which would have a range of rulemaking, information-gathering, supervisory, and enforcement tools to better protect consumers who purchase financial products from banks and non-bank financial institutions.

Small business is the engine for the American economy, creating 60 to 80 percent of new jobs, and is key to innovation and new technology, which are critical to creating new jobs and getting the American economy back on track. This afternoon, the House passed the Small Business Research and Innovation Act (HR 2965) by a vote of 386-41. The bill modernizes and reauthorizes the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs -- the government's largest small business research and development programs. Since 1992, SBIR has provided 65,000 grants to small companies engaged in cutting edge research to cure diseases, strengthen our national defense and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

The acts of violence and attempts to further exacerbate ethnic tensions on all sides must be rejected. The Chinese government should take the necessary steps to ensure that the right to peaceful expression is protected and to allow journalists, observers, and organizations to report on developments without restrictions."

On February 13th, Congress passed the final American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to save and create millions of jobs, get our economy moving again, and transform it for long-term growth and stability by investing in America's infrastructure. Despite difficult unemployment news last month, the Recovery Act is beginning to work--according to Mark Zandi of Moody's Economy.com, without the stimulus, the economy would have lost about 500,000 more jobs in the last three months:
