“Pay-as-you-go budget accountability has been a centerpiece of Democratic budget discipline since the early 1980s. In the 1990s, when a Democratic Congress and President Bill Clinton were able to implement this discipline, we reversed the huge deficits of the Reagan-Bush years and produced four years of budget surpluses while funding American priorities. That fiscal discipline helped produce an economic boom with rising household incomes for millions of Americans."

This afternoon, the House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution condemning the murder of Dr. George Tiller, speaking with one voice to say "violence is deplorable and never an acceptable avenue for expressing opposing viewpoints."

Condemning the murder of Dr. George Tiller, who was shot to death at his church on May 31, 2009.Whereas Dr. George Tiller was murdered in Wichita, Kansas, on May 31, 2009;
Whereas Dr. Tiller is mourned by his family, friends, congregation, community, and colleagues;
Whereas Dr. Tiller, 67, was killed in his place of worship, a place intended for peace and refuge that in a moment became a place for violence and murder;

Speaker Pelosi joined President Obama and Democratic Members of Congress at a news conference this afternoon as the President expressed his strong support for legislation that would reinstitute statutory pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) rules, restoring fiscal discipline to the federal government. Budget Chairman Spratt explained, "its terms are complex, but at its core, it is a common-sense rule that everyone can understand: when you are in a hole, you should quit digging."

This Friday, June 12th, the nation's full-power television stations will switch to all-digital programming and analog television sets that are not connected to a converter box, cable, or satellite will stop working. The transition is critical because it will free up airwaves for broadband and enhanced emergency communications for our police officers, firefighters, and other first responders. In February, President Obama and Congress worked to delay the digital television transition from February 17th to June 12th because it was clear that many Americans would have been left in the dark had the conversion gone on as planned. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed into law just over 100 days ago, has created or saved over 150,000 jobs, cut taxes for 95 percent of working families and made funds available for over 4,000 transportation projects that put people back to work. Today, President Obama and Vice President Biden announced the Roadmap to Recovery initiative -- an effort to accelerate the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to create or save 600,000 jobs in the next 100 days, four times the number of jobs created or saved in the first 100 days.
