Sixty-five years ago, well more than one hundred thousand brave Americans and their allies stormed the beaches of Normandy. Many more attacked by sea and by air. Their mission was one of the most difficult ever attempted and its success is one of the proudest moments in America's very proud history. It remains one of the greatest examples of bravery and military strategy the world has ever known.

On D-Day, American troops changed the fate of millions. Within 100 days of their landing, Paris had been liberated and Nazi troops driven out of France. Less than a year later, victory in Europe was declared.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is beginning to help and American optimism is beginning to take hold in the private sector. And Americans are expecting their leaders to continue to strengthen our economy, by making quality health care more affordable and investing in comprehensive energy solutions that will create clean energy jobs. These steps will be essential to our long-term economic competitiveness and 21st century American prosperity.

The New Direction Congress will lead the way, and we will do so with fiscal discipline, responsibility and accountability.

On June 4th, 1989, thousands of Chinese students, workers, and citizens marched in peace in Tiananmen Square. They raised the Goddess of Democracy in the image of our own Statue of Liberty. They quoted America's Founding Fathers. They called for democratic reform, freedom of speech and assembly, and an end to corruption. Then, the People's Liberation Army was used against them -- crushing demonstrators in Tiananmen Square, killing thousands, and crushing dissent throughout China.
