“North Dakotans are no stranger either to the ideal of neighbors helping neighbors. Through the weekend and early parts of this week, thousands of people -- including high school and college students, National Guardsmen, women, and our own Congressman Earl Pomeroy, among many others -- have stood shoulder-to-shoulder, filling sandbags to protect Fargo and other cities from the dangers of rising waters. Others have come together to offer shelter to those forced to leave their homes."

Today, the House Budget Committee is marking up the Budget Resolution for Fiscal Year 2010, incorporating the key principles of the President's budget - investing in education, health care and energy, giving a tax cut to 95 percent of the American people, and cutting the deficit in half by 2013 by making smart investments, cutting non-defense domestic discretionary spending to its lowest level in nearly half a century, and ending an era of irresponsibility and gimmicks. The recession has put a large strain on a great many American families, especially the millions of women and families who already were struggling to make ends meet. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed by President Obama on February 17, is designed to begin to turn our economy around and includes a number of key provisions that are especially important for women and children. This afternoon, the Democratic Women's Working Group held a roundtable to discuss the impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on women and children. Speaker Pelosi explained:
