Following a House Democratic leadership meeting this afternoon, Speaker Pelosi announced that House leaders have directed the Committees on Ways and Means, Financial Services, and Judiciary to present legislation this week enabling taxpayers to recoup misspent public dollars from companies, such as American International Group, that have received billions in dollars in assistance from the U.S. Treasury.

Today, President Obama announced plans to take immediate action to help small businesses create jobs by increasing the flow of credit and lowering the cost of borrowing. The President's proposal builds on provisions included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that provide tax breaks to small businesses.

“The American people do not want their tax dollars spent on bonuses for AIG executives who have mismanaged their company into near bankruptcy. AIG executives should voluntarily forgo their excessive retention payments, but if they refuse, the U.S. Treasury should use whatever tools at its disposal to make AIG repay taxpayers."
