While American workers see their wages decline and face record job losses, it is unconscionable that AIG, which is receiving more than $170 billion in government assistance, would permit such extravagant executive compensation practices without any accountability to the taxpayer.
I have asked Chairman Barney Frank of the House Financial Services Committee to examine options that are legally available to recover taxpayer funds of companies that abuse the privilege of taxpayer assistance.
I call upon the executives at AIG to right the wrong they have done to American taxpayers, who are footing the bill for the most expensive government rescue in history. They should renounce the bonuses and refuse the excessive retention pay they previously agreed to.

Today is Pi Day. The Greek letter Pi is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter and is rounded to 3.14. Many teachers and schools plan events around 3/14 to engage students in math and science activities. This week the House approved H.Res. 224, supporting the designation of Pi Day and its celebration around the world; recognizing the continuing importance of National Science Foundation's math and science education programs; and encouraging schools and educators to observe the day with appropriate activities that teach students about Pi and engage them about the study of mathematics. The first Pi Day was celebrated in 1988 at San Francisco's Exploratorium.

“The Omnibus appropriations bill signed into law today by President Obama includes a provision that will prevent drastic cuts in Ryan White HIV/AIDS care and treatment funds for San Francisco and 12 other urban areas across the country. The inclusion of this essential protection will restore nearly $7 million in funding for the San Francisco Eligible Metropolitan Area, which includes Marin and San Mateo counties. Today, Speaker Pelosi, Leader Hoyer and Appropriations Chairman Obey announced two new additional measures to the committee's earmarking process:
Increased Executive Branch Review: When a Member submits a request for an earmark, the appropriate Executive Branch agency will be given 20 days to review the project to ensure that the earmark is eligible to receive funds and meets goals established in law.Competitive Selection Required of Earmark Funding Directed to For-Profits: For any earmark intended to be directed to a for-profit entity, the Executive Branch will be required to ensure that the earmark will be awarded through a competitive bidding process.
