On the 36th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting a woman's right to make her own reproductive health care decisions.

We do so just two days after swearing in a new President who is committed to the fundamental right to privacy. I will work with President Obama, as I have worked throughout my entire career, to ensure a woman's right to choose. That is because decisions about whether to have a child do not and should not rest with the government. We believe a woman -- in consultation with her family, her physician, and her faith -- is best qualified to make that decision.

Growing Support for the American Recovery & Reinvestment Bill

Next week, the House will vote on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, working from priorities shared with President Barack Obama. The plan will create and save 3 to 4 million jobs, jumpstart our economy, and transform it for the 21st century. Unprecedented accountability and transparency measures are built in to help ensure tax dollars are spent wisely. $550 billion is strategically targeted to priority investments; $275 billion in targeted tax cuts will also help spur economic recovery.

TARP Reform and Accountability Act Passes

Today, the House passed the TARP Reform and Accountability Act (HR 384) by a vote of 260-166 to amend the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) provisions of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (EESA) to:

strengthen accountability, close loopholes, increase transparency -- forcing banks to report how government funds are being spent

require Treasury to take significant steps on foreclosure mitigation, calling for spending $100 billion (with a minimum of $40 billion) of TARP funds to help homeowners

affirm that TARP should be used to benefit small financial institutions, consumer lending, auto companies, and municipalities
