Chairman Waxman has set an aggressive timetable for action to reduce global warming and our dependence on foreign oil. I share his sense of urgency and his belief that we cannot afford another year of delay.
The House is fortunate to have the leadership of Chairman Waxman and Energy and Environment Subcommittee Chairman Ed Markey on climate and energy issues; their knowledge of these issues and commitment to finding the right solutions is unmatched. They will build on the work of Chairman Emeritus John Dingell and former Subcommittee Chair Rick Boucher on energy independence. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House, our colleagues in the Senate, and President Obama to halt the grave threat of climate change.

In the next two weeks, the House will consider the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan, which makes long-term investments that are worthy, needed, fully-screened, and based on merit, not politics. Developed with priorities shared by President-elect Obama, the plan will create or save 3 to 4 million American jobs, with an estimated 90 percent of the jobs created in the private sector--getting the American economy moving in the short term and making investments for a stronger economy in the long term. The Chairman's mark (draft legislation) will be circulated and posted online later today and next week the Ways and Means Committee, Energy and Commerce Committee, and Appropriations Committee will mark-up the legislation.

“At a time of economic crisis, nothing could be more essential than ensuring that children of hardworking families receive the quality health care that they deserve. Many of these children are from families of hardworking Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. It is sad to say that Americans lost 2.6 million jobs last year. Over half a million jobs were lost in the month of December. 500,000 jobs were lost in the month of December. It was actually 526, 000 jobs."

Speaker Pelosi announced today that the House Democratic Steering Committee has nominated appointments to the House Agriculture Committee, House Education & Labor Committee, House Foreign Affairs Committee, House Judiciary Committee, House Natural Resources Committee, House Oversight & Government Reform Committee, House Science & Technology Committee, House Small Business Committee, and House Veterans' Affairs Committee. The Democratic Caucus also approved the Speaker's nominations to the House Rules Committee.

Today, the House passed the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009, H.R. 2 by a vote of 289-139. This legislation expands the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to cover 11 million children. The program currently provides health insurance for more than 7 million children, but this legislation will protect coverage for those children and expand it to include an additional 4 million children who would otherwise be uninsured. Similar legislation was vetoed twice in the last Congress by President Bush.
