Democrats press Gates, KBR on poor electrical work

A pair of powerful Democrats on Friday called on the Pentagon and KBR Inc. to address inferior electrical work by private contractors on U.S. military bases in Iraq being blamed for the deaths of at least two U.S. soldiers.Rep. Henry Waxman of California, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates and KBR demanding details on the failures of electrical systems on bases throughout Iraq that have caused hundreds of fires and the deaths of Staff Sgts. Christopher Lee Everett of Huntsville, Texas, and Ryan Maseth of Pittsburgh.

Today, the House debated the Drill Responsibly in Leased Lands (DRILL) Act, a bill to promote the responsible domestic production of oil and natural gas, particularly in 20 million acres of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. Though the bill received strong majority support in a vote of 244 to 173, it failed to receive the two-thirds necessary to pass under suspension of the rules. 162 Republicans voted against the proposal, which would increase domestic production of oil and gas on federal lands onshore and offshore.

Today, Rep. Brad Miller introduced the Special Criminal Contempt of Congress Act. The bill provides for a Special Division of the U.S. Court of Appeals to appoint an independent, "special advocate" to investigate and prosecute alleged Contempt of Congress against current and former Executive Branch employees when the U.S. Attorney refuses to act. The bill is co-sponsored by Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, and Subcommittee Chairs Linda Sanchez and Jerrold Nadler.
