From the Judiciary Committee:

Conyers and Sánchez: Rove Must Appear

(Washington, DC)- Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and Subcommittee Chairwoman Linda Sánchez (D-CA, Commercial and Administrative Law Subcommittee) sent a letter to Robert Luskin, attorney for former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove, confirming their expectation that he appear and testify before the subcommittee on July 10. Committee staff had been negotiating with Luskin, but the discussions reached an impasse, with Luskin only offering to provide off-the-record interviews with Rove about the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman. The subpoena was issued for testimony regarding the broader issue of politicization in the Justice Department, including the Siegelman matter.

Today, broadcast journalism lost one of its giants, who will be remembered along with names like Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, and David Brinkley. The City of Buffalo has also lost its favorite son, who loved his city and its hometown team, the Bills. The smile that came across Tim's face whenever he spoke of the place of his birth and his favorite football team was one of true joy and I will never forget it.

Tim Russert embodied the very best in broadcast journalism and has been a fixture in millions of living rooms every Sunday morning on 'Meet the Press,' an institution that he shaped into one of the most influential news and opinion programs of our time. A stellar journalist, Tim also touched our hearts with his loving portrait of his father in the best-selling book, 'Big Russ and Me.'

When Will House Republicans Admit They Are Wrong Too?

Last night, Vice President Dick Cheney's office admitted that his assertion before the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that China is drilling "60 miles of the coast of Florida" was wrong and that, in fact, there is no Chinese deepwater drilling in that area.

Will the House Republican Leadership follow the Vice President's lead and admit they were wrong too?

"Today's economic news that consumer prices rose largely due to record energy prices is a direct consequence of allowing energy companies write our national policy. That approach - as illustrated in the Cheney Task Force - has resulted in record profits for the oil industry, and record prices for American consumers."

The House has just passed the Emergency Extended Unemployment Compensation Act, H.R. 5749, by a veto-proof margin of 274-137 after Republicans blocked the legislation yesterday. The legislation will immediately provide up to 13 weeks of extended unemployment benefits in every state to workers exhausting the 26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits, providing much-needed relief to 3.8 million unemployed workers to assist them with rapidly rising gas and food costs, while they continue to struggle to find work in the slowing economy.
