It is for our military readiness, for the families of our brave men and women in uniform, for our national security, and for our standing in the world that America needs a New Direction in Iraq - not the continuation of the President's plan for at least a 10-year, $3 trillion dollar war in Iraq. Democrats will continue to push for an end to the war in Iraq and increased oversight of that war.

On March 19, 2003, President Bush launched the war with Iraq. The Bush Administration seemed convinced that the Iraq war would be short and easy -- with our troops coming home quickly. Five years later, America is bogged down in a war whose costs continue to rise every week and every month -- in blood and in treasure.

Chairman Henry Waxman of the Oversight Committee sent the following letter (pdf) to Secretary of Defense Gates today:

Dear Mr. Secretary:

As part of the Oversight Committee's ongoing oversight of Iraq contract management, I am writing to request documents relating to the Department of Defense's management of contracts for maintenance of electrical systems in facilities occupied by military and contractor personnel in Iraq. This issue was brought to my attention by Representative Jason Altmire, who requested that the Committee initiate an investigation into the death by accidental electrocution of Staff Sergeant Ryan D. Maseth, a Special Forces soldier from Pennsylvania.

Today's Federal Reserve rate cut is another strong signal of Chairman Bernanke's commitment to addressing the consequences of the credit crisis and restoring confidence in the markets.

While the Fed is aggressively working to stabilize the financial markets, the President said he would wait to see 'if there needs to be further action.' Democrats believe that the time is now to build on the Fed's efforts, by taking action to ease the economic burdens facing everyday Americans, especially those threatened by foreclosure, unemployment and rising energy and health care costs.

I am hopeful that the President will work with Congress to help families who are struggling to make ends meet.

In a letter to the Wall Street Journal, Congressman Howard Berman states, "Rather than allowing Congress to adequately assess whether Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe has taken meaningful steps to protect labor leaders and other human rights activists...you are pushing for Congress to approve this agreement before that assessment is made."

While there is no quick fix to repair our struggling economy, more must be done to begin to reverse the economic mismanagement of the past seven years. Congress is prepared to work with the Bush Administration to help alleviate the serious economic hardship facing America's families.

In contrast to the President, we believe that further decisive action is needed now. We must consider extending unemployment benefits, providing food stamp assistance, and providing targeted fiscal relief to states to avoid cuts to critical services. We must also do more to help families avoid foreclosure, which is why I am pleased that Chairman Barney Frank is leading this effort in the House.

I urge the Administration to carefully consider these proposals now before Congress and to again work with Democrats to restore consumer and market confidence and support hardworking American families.
