Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and House Administration Committee Chairman Robert Brady released the following letter to Chief Administrative Officer Daniel Beard yesterday, directing him to take the steps to create a program to employ war veterans in the House of Representatives:

Dear Mr. Beard:
For many combat veterans returning home, the transition from a military to a civilian career can be difficult. For those who have been severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, the transition can be particularly challenging because of the nature of their injuries and ongoing health considerations.

The Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties is currently holding a hearing, "Torture and the Cruel, Inhuman, and Degrading Treatment of Detainees: The Effectiveness and Consequences of 'Enhanced' Interrogation." Witnesses will be Malcolm W. Nance, Anti-terrorism/Counter-terrorism Intelligence Specialist, Former SERE Instructor; Steven Kleinman, Colonel, USAFR, Intelligence & National Security Specialist, Senior Intelligence Officer/Military Interrogator; Amrit Singh, Staff Attorney at the ACLU. As the Wall Street Journal notes today, former Guantanamo Bay prosecutor Lt. Col. V. Stuart Couch was set to testify, but was prevented by the Defense Department.

The House has begun debate on the rule for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), H.R. 3685, to be followed by debate on the bill itself. In 30 states, it is currently legal to fire someone simply because of his or her sexual orientation. This bill will prohibit employers, employment agencies and labor unions from using an individual's sexual orientation as the basis for employment decisions, such as hiring, firing, promotion or compensation. The bill extends federal employment protections to gay, lesbian, and bisexual workers similar to those already provided to a person based on race, religion, sex, national origin, age or disability.
