The Oversight Committee is currently holding a hearing, "Assessing the State of Iraqi Corruption." The hearing will evaluate the status of corruption in the Iraqi government and whether U.S. government efforts to address this continuing problem have been adequate. The following witnesses will testify: Judge Radhi Hamza al-Radhi, former head of the Iraqi Commission on Public Integrity; Mr. David Walker, Comptroller General of the United States; Mr. Stuart Bowen, Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction; Ambassador Larry Butler, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Near East Affairs, U.S. Department of State; and Ms. Claudia Rosett, Journalist-in-Residence, Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi was joined by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other House and Senate Democratic leaders at a news conference this morning in the Capitol to offer a plan to stem the rising tide of home foreclosures created by the subprime mortgage market crisis. Below are Pelosi's opening remarks:
"Thank you, Leader Reid. Today, our country faces a challenge that threatens the economic security of our economy and the dream of home ownership for many of America's working families -- the subprime lending crisis."The number of foreclosures reported in August was more than double than the same time one year ago. This past August alone, 240,000 American families faced the heartbreak of losing their home.

Judiciary Committee Members Write to Acting AG on "Phone Jamming," Voter Suppression Cases

Today Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, and Subcommittee Chairpersons Robert C. Scott, Jerrold Nadler, and Linda Sánchez sent a letter to Acting Attorney General Peter D. Keisler seeking answers about allegations of voter suppression in battleground states across the country, using a technique called "phone jamming," as well as failing to register Democratic voters and destroying Democratic voter registration cards.

Moments before President Bush vetoed the expansion of children's health care this morning, Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR-04) spoke on the floor about the veto and the contrast with the President's request for nearly $200 billion more for the war in Iraq:

DeFazio: "After running up more debt than the 42 presidents who preceded him, $3.2 trillion borrowed and spent, $9 trillion total debt on the backs of the American people, presiding over doubling of our international debt to more than $2.2 trillion, last week he proposed that we should borrow and spend another $190 billion in the war in Iraq. Nearly $600 [billion] since he launched this unnecessary war. |
