We Remain Committed to Making SCHIP Into Law--With or Without the President's Support

Today the President had an opportunity to sign a bipartisan bill that will bring health care to 10 million children in families struggling to make ends meet. Instead, President Bush used his cruel veto pen to say 'I forbid 10 million children from getting the health benefits they deserve.

Despite the President's veto, we will continue to work with a bipartisan majority in Congress and 43 governors from across the country to increase support for SCHIP in the House so we can override the veto and provide 10 million children the health coverage they need and deserve.

The President chose to block a bill with strong bipartisan consensus--which has so much potential for good--to force Congress to mount a veto override effort. We remain committed to making SCHIP into law--with or without the President's support.

Financial Services Hearing on Global Poverty

The Financial Services Committee is currently holding a hearing, "The Fight against Global Poverty and Inequality: the World Bank's Approach to Core Labor Standards and Employment Creation." Representatives of the International Trade Union Confederation/Global Unions, Millers Rock Consulting, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the AFL-CIO, the Brookings Institution and the ABN-AMRO will testify.

House Supports Democracy in Burma
October 2, 2007
Today, the House voted 413-2 in favor of H. Con. Res. 200, Condemning the Violent Suppression of Buddhist Monks and Other Peaceful Demonstrators in Burma, which denounces the violence and human rights violations in Burma and calls for the immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Speaker Pelosi:

"And so my colleagues I again commend Aung San Suu Kyi as she years ago called on individuals, organizations, and governments to support Burma's democracy movement. And at that time she said, 'please use your liberty to promote ours.' Today on the floor of the United States House of Representatives, we are doing just that.

Oversight Hearing on Blackwater Panel II
October 2, 2007
The Oversight Committee is currently holding a hearing, "Private Security Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan." The hearing will examine the mission and performance of private military contractor Blackwater USA in Iraq and Afghanistan. Erik Prince, the owner of Blackwater, testified in the first panel, with three State Department officials testifying in this second panel.

The Oversight Committee is currently holding a hearing, "Private Security Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan." The hearing will examine the mission and performance of private military contractor Blackwater USA in Iraq and Afghanistan. Erik Prince, the owner of Blackwater, will testify as well as three State Department officials. The hearing will address three key questions: (1) Is Blackwater's presence advancing or undermining U.S. efforts? (2) Has State Department responded appropriately to the shooting incidents involving Blackwater forces? (3) What are the costs to U.S. taxpayers for the reliance on Blackwater and other private military contractors?

DHS Delays Launch of Spy Satellite Program

October 1, 2007 (WASHINGTON) -- After several requests from the Homeland Security Committee calling for a moratorium on the controversial use of spy satellite imagery for domestic purposes, the Department has heeded the call and delayed its planned October 1st launch of its new National Applications Office (NAO). The Department has cited the need to address unanswered privacy and civil liberties questions from Congress -- as addressed in the Committee's September 6th hearing on the matter and also in letters from August 22nd and September 6th from Committee Members.
