The Congressional Budget Office released estimates Thursday showing that the cost of a long-term United States troop presence in Iraq, similar to the U.S. commitment in South Korea, could reach $2 trillion or more in 2008 dollars.
Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel responded today:
"As a direct result of President Bush's misguided choices, America is mired in an endless occupation in Iraq. If the President has his way, our children will be paying the price to police the streets in Baghdad for the next four decades."
"President Bush should support the bipartisan SCHIP legislation for 10 million reasons --the 10 million children who will receive health care coverage should this bill become law.
"These 10 million children are joined by the Republicans and Democrats in Congress and in the governors' offices across the country. The SCHIP bill is supported by a coalition of 270 groups, from the AARP to the YMCA. I'm disappointed that the President has issued a veto threat this morning against this bill that has so much bipartisan, indeed nonpartisan, support.

And we will spend $300 million each and every day we are there. It seems these massive losses do not register with some of my Republican colleagues who continue to support an open-ended commitment in iraq. In fact, Republican Leader Boehner even said recently, when asked how much longer we stay in Iraq, that the sacrifice being made will be a small price. I don't think so, Madam Speaker." |
Conyers Announces Forum, Hearings on "Jena Six"(Washington, DC)- Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) told a crowd gathered on the Capitol grounds that he is holding a forum next week and plans to hold hearings to address the case of six teenagers in Jena, Louisiana who were charged with attempted murder for a schoolyard fight. Conyers spoke during a rally of support for the students, now being called the "Jena Six," in Washington, in coordination with rallies in Jena and other U.S. cities.
